I recently attended the Animal Ag Alliance Summit in Washington, D.C. Animal Ag Alliance is an organization that spans all livestock industries and communicates reliable, science-based information on key agricultural topics ranging from animal welfare to biotechnology to environmental impacts. The Summit, which marked its 16th year, is a great forum for identifying agricultural issues and finding representative solutions.
This year brought an additional wrinkle to the discussion—how activists are using religion to forward their agenda. Activists target people with strong religious beliefs for a few reasons:
This group obviously is passionate about what they believe
They tend to donate more money than the average population
This group tends to have sustained intensity over a long period of time
It’s an interesting dichotomy that an industry based fundamentally in Christian beliefs would be attacked using that very same platform.
