The Department of Health and Human Services, the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Education are teaming up with an unlikely character to help prevent the spread of H1N1 influenza. Sesame Street’s “Elmo” will soon appear in a series of public service announcements (PSAs) targeted at young families—one of the demographics most at risk.
It’s not the first time Sesame Street got involved. According to a Health and Human Services news release, Sesame Workshop was the first nonprofit to respond to the H1N1 outbreak in Mexico by producing PSAs starring Plaza Sésamo characters and Mexican celebrities.
The campaign is part of a larger government effort to focus on prevention and preparedness in hopes of slowing an expected resurgence of H1N1 and comes just as millions of kids return to school. A vaccine against H1N1 is being tested but may not be released until midOctober.
