Tribute to Dr. Norman Borlaug

Nobel Peace Prize winner and noted scientist Norman Borlaug passed away this Saturday, September 12, in Dallas, Texas. Borlaug was best known and recognized for his passion and dedication to crop research, increasing crop yields and fight against world hunger.

Borlaug made many contributions to modern agriculture and started what we know now as the "Green Revolution." He is most recognized for winning the 1970 Nobel Peace Prize for developing high-yielding, disease-resistant wheat that has been used to prevent famine in developing countries throughout the world. He was also named Distinguished Professor of International Agriculture in Texas A&M University's Department of Soil and Crop Sciences and in 2007 accepted the Congressional Gold Medal--the highest civilian honor of the United States.

Borlaug once said, "I am but one member of a vast team made up of many organizations, officials, thousands of scientists, and millions of farmers - mostly small and humble."

We should celebrate Borlaug's achievements, congratulate farmers who have benefited from his contributions and continue to evolve agriculture through his research and dedication.
