Memphis Hosts Ag Relations Council

Delta blues, award-winning barbeque and a rich agricultural history. That’s what we found in Memphis, Tenn., while attending the 2010 Agricultural Relations Council annual meeting last week. The Agricultural Relations Council (ARC) is an association for public relations professionals working in a wide variety of agricultural industries.

The theme for this year’s ARC meeting was “Consumer Outreach for Ag” and those of us in attendance learned about innovative ways agricultural groups in Tennessee are increasing their share of voice with consumers.

The Tennessee Farm Bureau (TFB), for example, is tapping into social media channels to engage consumers about the state’s agricultural heritage and values. With a robust Facebook page, an active Twitter account and educational videos on YouTube, TFB is successfully extending the voice of farmers to a broader consumer audience.

Agricenter International, “The World's Largest Urban Farm and Research Test Facility”, located just outside Memphis is offering an array of public educational programs on agricultural production. Farm Education Day, Plant Camp and other youth programming is helping to educate children of all ages about the role agriculture plays in their everyday lives.

With the preponderance of misinformation about agriculture being circulated by noncredentialed sources with suspect agendas, it’s essential that consumers hear from those who work, live and breathe agriculture every day—farmers. And it’s great to see the ag community in Tennessee is making sure that happens.
