The future looks bright for dairy industry

The title alone is reason enough to read this blog post. After listening to a Penn State Dairy Alliance Webinar this morning, the message is the future is still bright for the dairy producers who choose to embrace it. Here are some things I learned from Dr. Ken Bailey, ag economist with Penn State University, during the Webinar:

  • While prices have dropped significantly in the last 6 months, the price of butter and nonfat dry milk has crept higher over the past two weeks.
  • Futures are showing milk prices climbing to around $15 by the third quarter of 2009 in response to the prediction that fewer cows will be producing milk in the United States.
  • Going up is the only option. We’ve hit the low point in the milk price curve, which means the price producers are getting paid for milk is in the way up.
  • People are still eating dairy products! While high-end restaurant numbers may be down, the purchasing of dairy products at grocery stores remains strong.

The second-part in the two-part Webinar series will take place multiple times beginning Friday. To learn more about participating, click here.
