That’s what I thought when I read the recent news about the suggested tax on chocolate and strawberry flavored milk. Apparently, the U.S. Senate Finance Committee is considering a tax on sugared drinks in an effort to increase revenue for health care reform and help fight child obesity.
It’s a suggestion that has upset many dairy producers as well as spokespersons for the National Milk Producers Federation and the International Dairy Foods Association, who say flavored milk should not be lumped in with soft drinks since (although sugared) it provides nine essential nutrients that kids need — something not found in soft drinks.
It’s sure to be a contentious piece of legislation if it ever comes to light. And lawmakers will have to watch out, especially, for blogger moms with picky kids. They’re a segment of the population that knows all too well that a little bit of flavor goes a long way in making milk more appealing — and they’re sure to be vocal.
