While Wisconsin boasts stunning landscapes, strong communities and schools, and innovative businesses, dairying defines our great state and acts as the foundation of our economy. This is why, each June, we set aside an entire month to thank and recognize our hard-working dairy farmers, processors and dairy food artisans.
Today Wisconsin’s dairy industry generates $20.6 billion and is home to 14,000 farms, 200 processing plants and 1,200 butter and cheese makers. Our great state supplies more than 25 percent of the national cheese market, 13 percent of the milk market and nearly half of the specialty cheese market.
In the past year, the dairy industry has fallen on hard times and is facing many challenges. Thankfully our dairymen continue to find ways to remain optimistic, find opportunities to sustain, if not grow, their businesses and invest in environmentally friendly technologies to ensure dairying will continue to be a way of life for generations to come.
This month, and all year long, raise a glass (of milk) and toast the dairy farm families that feed us.
